System 15000 casts you as a hacker recovering stolen money by dialing into a fictional network of computer systems. The framing: a contact writes that rival firm Realco has siphoned $1.5 million from a friend’s company, Comdata, the police cannot recover it, and the job falls to you. The entire game is a terminal. You start from a single phone number and access code printed on the inlay, then work outward through a chain of systems, harvesting the credentials for the next node from the one you just cracked, until you reach the account holding the money and move it back. It is the earliest game to make the act of intrusion itself the gameplay, and it seeded the hacking-sim genre that runs on through Activision’s Hacker (1985) and later Uplink (2001).

  • The terminal is the whole interface. You dial phone numbers, enter user IDs and passwords, read what a system returns, and dial onward. There is no avatar and no world map. The screen is the modem session.
  • Clue-chain across gated nodes. Progress is a directed trail. One documented path begins by logging into “Kingsdown Poly,” which yields company names and phone numbers; those unlock further systems; each cracked system supplies the credentials for the next, climbing toward the scammer’s bank. The player’s job is to read each system for the token that opens the following one.
  • Diegetic authentication. The puzzle tokens are phone numbers, user IDs, and passwords, all discovered inside the fiction. The review notes the game gives “not much there in the way of explanation other than phone numbers, user ids and passwords,” with little surrounding narrative, so the credentials themselves are the content.
  • Period-accurate connection texture. Each system “slowly appears as though it was coming through a 300 baud modem.” Dialing plays dial tones and ringing, and the game distinguishes UK from US number formats. The latency and audio are part of the presentation.
  • Being traced while inside. A police “line scan” sequence interrupts a session, forcing a disconnection (the review describes a roughly ten-minute wait). It is a periodic pressure that punishes lingering inside a system.
  • Objective: recover the funds. The end state is reaching the correct bank system and transferring the stolen money back. It is an intrusion whose goal is financial, resolved by a transfer.
  • Production. The C64 build was written in assembly; the ZX Spectrum and BBC Micro builds in BASIC. It sold for £9.95, drew strong period reviews (Sinclair User 9/10, Crash 7/10), and was re-released the same year as a “2nd Edition.” A planned sequel was never finished.
  • A fictional network navigated entirely by terminal. Dial, authenticate, read, move on. The loop is intrusion rendered as text, with no other UI required.
  • Credential clue-chain. Each node holds the key to the next: a graph of gated systems where reading is how you unlock. Naturally authorable as a mission graph.
  • Authentication as the gameplay token. Phone numbers, IDs, and passwords are objects the player collects and spends, each discovered inside the fiction.
  • Trace pressure. A periodic “your line is being scanned” event rewards working efficiently and punishes idling inside a system.
  • Connection as texture. A slow reveal, dial tones, and ringing turn latency into atmosphere. The delay is a feature of the feel.
  • Follow-the-funds resolution. An intrusion that ends in recovering and transferring money links hacking directly to an economy.
  • The core loop is the deck’s central fantasy stated plainly: a terminal you drive with typed commands to reach and crack a network of fictional systems. This is the HACKING/intrusion theme at the heart of the cluster.
  • The credential clue-chain (each cracked node yields the next node’s access) is a natural mission-graph shape for procedurally generated intrusion missions off the World Engine.
  • The police line-scan (being traced while inside) rhymes with the deck’s ICE and trace themes, and with the roguelike line-of-sight idea that a tracer cannot follow what it cannot see (see the roguelike design guidance).
  • The follow-the-funds objective ties an intrusion to the credits economy and to the forensic-accounting carts in the Black Ledger and CONDUIT lineage.
  • Author attribution, confirmed. The task named “John Wagstaff,” and that is correct. The design credit “Lee Kristofferson” is a pseudonym; John Wagstaff is the real name. This corrects the shorthand that the game was by “AVS”: A.V.S. is the development team, and Craig Communications Ltd is the publisher. Paul Vincent co-created the ZX Spectrum version.
  • Confidence: high on production facts and the core loop (dial into networked systems, harvest credentials, chain to the bank, transfer the funds), which multiple sources agree on. Medium on the popular “trace the money as it moves between accounts before it vanishes” phrasing: the detailed Lemon64 review describes a fixed clue-chain puzzle plus a police line-scan interruption, and does not confirm a money-in-motion mechanic or a countdown on the funds. This entry represents the mechanic as the review supports it and flags the looser phrasing as unconfirmed.
  • “First hacking simulator” is the standard claim (Wikipedia). The Hacker (1985), Neuromancer (1988), and Uplink (2001) connection is genre lineage, presented as continuity of the form and not as a claim of direct authorship influence.

  • Unverified: the exact NPC name in the setup letter (sources give both “Mike” and “Richard”); the precise line-scan timer; and whether the money can be lost by delay. The $1.5 million figure and the Comdata / Realco company names are consistent across sources.
